The Patent They Wish They Had

Looking at the headline-stealing news of the last few months, it’s clear patents have become a major force in the technology industry. Many companies, huge companies, have made a point of patenting everything they can in order to own influential technologies. Enter SwiftShader...

Last week, TransGaming announced it has secured a patent for the key proprietary technology that forms the core of our SwiftShader product. It is now protected by multiple patent offices across various jurisdictions, meaning we fully control a truly impactful technology that has industry-changing implications.

For those unfamiliar with SwiftShader, it is quite simply the world's fastest pure-software 3D graphics renderer. I'll skip the technical details since they're available in our recent white paper (http://transgaming.com/swiftshader), but in essence with the patent-protected SwiftShader, any product or technology that incorporates 3D rendering can achieve high quality graphics without the need for a separate and expensive graphics processing chip (also known as a GPU).

The potential impact of the technology is in reshaping all computer graphics by allowing application developers to run their software on any system, regardless of what GPU that system has (if any). The long-term impact cannot even be easily estimated, given the technology’s high likelihood to disrupt the entire computing industry. SwiftShader points the way for future hardware that combines aspects of both GPUs and CPUs. THAT is why so many companies are now looking at the patent with unadulterated envy. The significance of this patent to TransGaming cannot be overstated. Without exaggeration, we are architecting the future.

The convergence of the CPU and the GPU, as we rapidly move to multi-core architectures, is inevitable and is simply a function of time. There are a number of pioneering companies who already embrace TransGaming's SwiftShader vision; Google, Adobe, Citrix, and many more have already licensed the technology from us on long-term, multi-year contracts. Applications of SwiftShader are broad, from web browsers like Google's Chrome, to medical and defense imaging software, and everything in-between. That’s not an exaggeration. Any product, ANY, that renders 3D images is a potential licensee of SwiftShader. Let that sink in for a moment. The wide reaching implications and importance of SwiftShader start to become quite apparent very quickly. Imagine any one of the popular hand-held devices in the market today start utilizing SwiftShader as their graphics rendering solution of choice instead of a GPU. The possibilities for TransGaming are limitless but think of the advantages for that device maker: using a chip with processing cores which can switch easily between graphics rendering, general tasks, and perhaps radio processing means lower costs for hardware development and deployment.

SwiftShader’s growing list of licensees are just scratching the surface of the possible applications, and we are consistently getting new inquiries from companies with exciting new ways to apply our technology. SwiftShader is quickly becoming a lucrative, recurring revenue source for TransGaming, and it’s no surprise given the sheer scope of the technology. As more and more begin to see the writing on the wall and move to a software rendering solution, we'll be here to empower them. In one swift stroke (no pun intended), TransGaming has laid the groundwork for the disruption of an entire industry. Again.

To TransGaming and countless tech industries, SwiftShader is truly a high impact, disruptive technology. To our competition (when they eventually appear), this will always be the patent they wish they had.

Sincerely,
Vikas Gupta
TransGaming Secures SwiftShader Software Patent

TORONTO, CANADA – January 29, 2013 – TransGaming Inc. (TSX-V: TNG) the global leader in the multiplatform deployment of video games, today announced it has secured a milestone patent for key proprietary technology that forms the core of TransGaming’s SwiftShader product, the world’s fastest pure-software 3D graphics renderer. SwiftShader has been licensed by industry-leading technology providers such as Adobe, Citrix, and Google, and is an essential component for a broad range of products from web browsers to defense and medical imaging applications.

The patent-protected SwiftShader 3D-graphics rendering engine eliminates the need for a separate graphics processor unit (GPU), allowing applications to use 3D graphics on the CPU alone. SwiftShader can drive the 3D experiences that consumers expect on their devices, and will have an increasingly strategic role to play as CPU and GPU technologies converge in the future. The patent ensures the protection of this far-reaching technology as it is adopted across a broad range of industries and applications, giving TransGaming a competitive edge in 3D rendering and parallel processing technology moving forward.

Originally filed in March 2006, the United States Patent and Trademark Office issued the patent, titled “General Purpose Software Parallel Task Engine”, on October 9, 2012. The patent has also been granted in Canada and approved in Europe, giving TransGaming wide-scale protection on this important technology.

"TransGaming has played an instrumental role as the provider of deep intellectual property for the video games industry, and we have been a key technology provider and architect for the future of 3D graphics in many applications. This patent for our SwiftShader core technology serves as additional affirmation of both our technical leadership and the strategic importance of our IP with widespread industry implications," said Vikas Gupta, CEO & President of TransGaming, Inc. "SwiftShader delivers the 3D experiences that consumers have come to expect on their devices and will be a critical element in driving the convergence of CPU and GPU hardware. We believe SwiftShader, with the patent protection we now have, will be a disruptive force for a range of companies, technologies, and devices with strategic licensing opportunities ahead."

TransGaming has authored a white paper that provides additional details on SwiftShader that can be viewed at: http://transgaming.com/swiftshader

I’m at the 2013 International CES (Consumer Electronics Show), and as usual there is rampant discussion about what will be the "next big thing" of the coming year. CES reports in Fast Company, Tech Crunch, and The Wall Street Journal (among many, many others) all focus on the future of Connected TV and the incredible, lifestyle-changing effects it will have. Whether it’s Panasonic’s new Connected TV with built-in photo editing or Samsung’s new Smart TV SDK for Linux and Mac, the entire tech industry seems to be embracing Connected TV. Well, no big surprise there! TransGaming has been a leader and proponent of the Connected TV industry for years, demonstrating the incredible power of such connectivity before the average individual (or industry exec for that matter) knew what Connected TV or Smart TV were. So, it's nice to see the rest of the tech sector finally catching up (come on over, we saved you a seat!).

TransGaming has been fully immersed in Connected TV since it first arose, and while I obviously agree it will change consumer behavior, I also think that the industry overall needs to take a revolutionary, rather than reactionary approach. In a recent interview, Richard Hilleman, Chief Creative Officer at EA, said "My view is that games on connected TVs... will serve mostly the audience that current plays mobile, tablet and online titles." "I think the US and European markets will mostly be interested in products that don’t fit in a console experience. Shorter duration game cycles (20 minutes for connected TV, versus two hours at a time for console)."

I’ve known Rich for a long time and, with all due respect to Rich and our long-time partner EA, I feel the need to disagree. To suggest that Connected TV will mostly be relegated to simpler games is altogether too reactionary, but it’s a mindset I’m even seeing now at CES. Connected TV only favours short games at the moment because that's what people have access to. Remember the Hollywood hit film, Field of Dreams? "If you build it, they will come" - and it's never been more true. TransGaming has been talking about (and developing) "platform-defining experiences" for ages now and we’re demonstrating this first-hand with three letters, WPT (World Poker Tour, just in case).

For those who have not seen the glowing press reactions yet, we have developed an exclusive WPT game for our GameTree™ TV video games platform for Connected TV. It’s currently being shown at a number of CES booths, including our longtime partners Intel and Philips uWand. Players can experience an entirely revolutionary style of social living room gameplay, where smartphones and tablets can be incorporated as second screens and controllers. Groups of friends can play together in a single connected living room, rather than at separate consoles worlds apart. It's a solution that's the best of both worlds, with gameplay that’s easy to pick up (just like a casual game), yet will keep players utterly immersed for hours (just like a console game). Combined, they open up an entirely new dimension by making the living room SOCIAL again. Remember how great it was when the living room was the social hub of the home? You're welcome!

Companies throughout CES are throwing their support behind Connected TV. Analysts and the media are screaming that Connected TV will change consumer behavior. Yes it will, but only if we give them truly remarkable and revolutionary experiences that show them what’s possible. This is a time for innovation, and rather than taking the same tired experiences from other platforms and bolting them on to Connected TV through hack ports, the industry should be creating entirely new, fully immersive and social experiences that are tailor-made for this incredible new technology. That’s what we’re doing at TransGaming TODAY… Just imagine what we have in store for tomorrow!

As I walk from booth to booth here at CES, I can’t help but be excited. Not only at the technology on display, but in knowing I’m walking among the biggest companies in the world, many of whom look to TransGaming as a vision of what’s to come. Without breaking confidentiality agreements, we have great things on the horizon and a lot of exciting news brewing. Everything from new deployments to new licensing deals are all being finalized. 2013 marks the rise of the Connected TV and we’re right there, front and center, working hard to define this next generation of social, fun, living room experiences.

It’s up to companies like TransGaming to take that leadership position and show the world what’s possible. That’s why I suspect that in a couple of years I’ll again be commenting on the rest of the industry finally catching up. Don’t worry I’ll save them a seat.

Sincerely,
TransGaming Launches Upgraded GameTree™TV Platform

New Version Built for Rapid Adoption Through Streamlined Interface, Android Support, and Industry-Leading
Subscription Model

TORONTO, CANADA – December 5, 2012 – TransGaming Inc. (TSX-V: TNG) the global leader in the multiplatform deployment of video games, today announced it has launched a major upgrade to GameTree™ TV that delivers a streamlined, socially-focused experience, and fully shifts the platform to a subscription-only business model. In addition, GameTree TV, TransGaming's premier on-demand video games platform for Connected TV, now supports Google’s widely adopted Android operating system.

This launch of the upgraded GameTree TV platform is an important milestone in TransGaming’s development roadmap to deliver a ubiquitous, immersive experience towards increasing user adoption and consumer stickiness across multiple systems and providers. Full support for Android gives GameTree TV the ability to be deployed on the system of choice for many next generation set-top boxes and over-the-top devices. Highlights of the upgraded GameTree TV platform include:

An enhanced user interface that further builds upon the innovative connected living room experience.

Support for Android, which further pushes the platform into new growth areas.

A monthly subscription-only service priced at €4,99 that delivers a continually refreshed catalogue starting at 40 games included in the price.

Full multi-screen gameplay capability that seamlessly allows players to use their tablets and smartphones as second screens and controllers.

Strong social connectivity, offering a compelling reason for users to subscribe and play with friends.

Continual updates with additional social features to be added in the coming months.

Free, the top-tier broadband service operator based in France, will be the first to benefit from the new GameTree TV platform before TransGaming releases it to other distribution partners in the coming months. GameTree TV’s usage has grown consistently since launch on Free with over 525,000 unique user downloads and in excess of 5,000,000 minutes of play time to-date.

"With this upgrade of GameTree TV, we have fully transitioned our business model to a subscription-only service at €4,99 per month for over 40 games, representing the best value of any content available on Free today. The addition of Android support means we can easily deliver this unparalleled experience on even more providers worldwide," said Vikas Gupta, CEO & President of TransGaming, Inc. "This is the most important GameTree TV release since the initial launch last year. We expect overall ARPU to increase and new opportunities with Android to materialize. This also sets the foundation for a roadmap of incredible features and capabilities that will be deployed in the coming months."

TransGaming Reports Fiscal Year 2013 First Quarter Results

TORONTO, CANADA – October 30, 2012 – TransGaming Inc. (TSX-V: TNG) ("TransGaming" or the "Company") today reported its first quarter fiscal year 2013 results. The Company's unaudited interim consolidated financial statements for the three months ended August 31, 2012 and Management's Discussion and Analysis have been filed and are available on SEDAR at www.sedar.com.

Highlights

TransGaming's first quarter of fiscal 2013 was an exciting period with a strong start to the fiscal year. Highlights during and subsequent to the quarter include:

The Company experienced year-over-year growth in revenue of 55% with total revenue of $1.55 million in the quarter driven by strong distribution revenues.

Quarterly net cash outflow was reduced by $0.8 million from the same period the prior year due to a reduction in expenses.

The Company announced it would commence trials with Select-TV in the Indo-Pacific region. This operator will initially introduce GameTree TV to 10,000 hotel suites in early November, with expansion to 50,000 suites and an audience of over a million guests in early calendar year 2013.

The Company announced an agreement with another major IPTV service provider in Asia.

TransGaming showcased GameTree TV at IBC2012 in Amsterdam in September. The Company's World Poker Tour® game with multi-screen gameplay was demonstrated which served as an outstanding glimpse of the capability of TransGaming's GameTree TV platform.

Commenting on the results, Vikas Gupta, CEO & President of TransGaming stated:

"Building on record revenues in FY2012, including Q4 being TransGaming's best quarter ever, we're extremely pleased with the strong start to FY2013. Within our first quarter we've achieved multiple milestones including year-over-year revenue growth of 55%, with revenue of $1.55 million, driven by strong growth in both our licensing and distribution business segments. We believe this strong quarter sets the stage for what I expect to be a remarkable fiscal year. With the addition of multiple service providers in Asia, GameTree TV continues to dominate the fastest growing connected TV market in the world. But TransGaming is not only expanding our markets, we are also hard at work on "platform defining experiences" with exclusive games developed from the ground up for GameTree TV such as the World Poker Tour® game. Based on the incredible levels of excitement generated at IBC2012, we expect the game will be a runaway hit and that the momentum behind GameTree TV will continue."

Mr. Gupta added: "This was a quarter in which TransGaming continued to lay the foundations for future success, but also began to reap the rewards of our dedication to innovation. Looking forward, we will continue to position the company for absolute ubiquity, by dominating markets and defining consumer experiences."

In addition, the Company also announced today that it had applied to the TSX Venture Exchange to issue 750,000 bonus shares to Business, Engineering, Science & Technology Discoveries Fund and three affiliate funds ("Best Funds") in connection with its $3.5 million debt financing announced on January 6, 2012. The bonus shares are for an extension of certain renegotiated covenants through to February 2013. The Company is in compliance with its debt covenants and continues to repay the promissory notes on the original payment terms. The bonus shares are subject to the approval of the TSX Venture Exchange and when issued will be subject to a holding period of four months and one day pursuant to applicable securities laws.

Conference Call Details
TransGaming will hold an analyst and investor conference call at 10:00 a.m. ET on Wednesday October 31, 2012 to review the first quarter fiscal 2013 results. The telephone number for the conference call is 416-695-6616.
Back to the Future of TV Gaming

Tech journalist Rick Gibson analyzes the current state of gaming on TV:

One analyst group forecasts that this sub-$100m market will grow to $1.6bn by 2016, making it one of the fastest growing games markets ever seen. What’s reinvigorating this formerly moribund market, why did it fail last time, and what opportunities and challenges does it face this time?

The Power of the Second Screen

The "Second Screen" is quickly becoming an industry buzzword, and with good reason. It will change the entire television industry. That is not hyperbole, it is already happening. For those unfamiliar with the concept, Second Screen refers to devices such as tablets or smartphones that are used in conjunction with a main television screen and the content it is showing. The most common current usage of Second Screen technology is to show additional content or complimentary information synchronized with the content on the main screen. For example, displaying information about an actor on a show you are currently watching.

Beyond that fairly dry definition lies the true power of the second screen, and it goes back to something TransGaming has long dedicated itself to: the connected living room. Apple recently reported global iPad sales of over 84 million units. Add to that other bestselling Android tablets, and the hundreds of millions of iPhones and other smartphones sold. With such ubiquity, it is no surprise that consumer habits are quickly changing to have their Second Screen device by their side at all times.

While most Second Screen applications focus on providing information, TransGaming is creating incredibly rich “experiences” for gaming that heighten the level of interactivity and consumer participation. The repercussions and resulting possibilities of what we are building are nothing short of transformative. Yesterday, gaming on the TV was a singular experience. But with our Second Screen technology and an innovative implementation, we are delivering dramatically more exciting experiences.

Imagine sitting in your connected living room playing World Poker Tour® poker on your TV. Your friends are in the room, but instead of simply watching, they are playing against you, fully immersed in the experience. Each player uses their smartphone or tablet to see their own cards, with the main television used for the community cards, dealer and chips. Immediately the experience is social, engaging, and interactive, with active participation. Immediately the living room is a hub, rather than an island. TransGaming has developed this exact experience for GameTree™ TV, and showcased it at one of the largest cable and broadcast shows in the world, IBC in Amsterdam. Using the second screen, the television and living room can achieve its biggest evolution since gaming was first brought into the home.

The second screen is already starting to change the way consumers interact with their television. It is up to visionary, industry-leading companies to deliver the truly remarkable and socially engaging experiences that fulfill their lofty expectations.

It can be done. It will be done. TransGaming has already taken the first steps. We are defining the new paradigm for television-based experiences.

Sincerely,
TransGaming Signs New Evaluation Agreement For The GameTree™ TV Platform In Asia

Trials to Begin with One of the Largest Broadband Service Providers in the Region

TORONTO, CANADA – September 5th, 2012 – TransGaming Inc. (TSX-V:TNG), the global leader in the multiplatform deployment of games, today announced that it has signed an evaluation agreement for GameTree™ TV with another top broadband service provider in the Asia region.

The agreement begins the process of lab and field trials this fall towards commercial deployment of GameTree TV, TransGaming's premier on-demand interactive entertainment platform for Smart TV. Delivering a deep catalog of globally recognized gaming brands for a broad family demographic, GameTree TV features innovations such as proprietary multi-screen technology that allows tablets and smartphones to be used as additional screens and controllers on existing set-top boxes.

Full commercial availability of GameTree TV on this service provider is expected in calendar 2013, beginning with major cities in the region. The service provider, which cannot currently be named due to confidentiality agreements, is expected to deliver broadband access to in excess of 100 million homes in the next three years.

"As the Asian region continues to rapidly adopt next generation Smart TV set-top boxes, providers are hungry for innovative, on-demand interactive content for the literally hundreds of millions of homes they service. GameTree TV fills that void by delivering a truly remarkable and socially engaging experience," commented Vikas Gupta, CEO & President of TransGaming Inc. "The increasing adoption of GameTree TV in one of the most competitive and fastest emerging regions in the world proves the advantage gained from TransGaming's consumer products. Service providers are recognizing that GameTree TV demonstrates the true potential of a connected living room experience, and they want it more than ever."
